For many people receiving behavioral health services, the structure, purpose, and connection provided by meaningful work can be an important step in recovery. AllHealth Network’s Individual Placement and Support (IPS) program helps clients take that step with tailored job search and placement assistance.
IPS is a supported employment evidence-based practice run to fidelity, meaning it follows a proven model designed to help individuals obtain and maintain competitive employment in their communities. The IPS team offers individualized job seeking, job development, and job retention services for clients with Medicaid coverage.
Clients referred to IPS must already be engaged in treatment at AllHealth Network. Individuals cannot be receiving medication management alone and must be participating in other programming such as therapy or additional behavioral health services.
At the heart of the program are employment specialists who work closely with clients throughout the job search process.
“The day-to-day operations of an employment specialist—we wear about five hats,” said IPS Program Manager Steve Petrone. “Anywhere from the initial intake, resume building, mock interviews, job development, networking, placement, and application services.”
IPS employment specialists help clients identify their strengths, goals, and potential while guiding them through each step of the employment process. Specialists assist with resume development, interview preparation, and job searches while also connecting with employers to understand their hiring needs and support long-term job retention.
IPS specialists collaborate closely with AllHealth Network clinical teams to ensure clients receive well-rounded support. The IPS team meets weekly with Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) teams to discuss shared clients and coordinate care.
The program works with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
“We may have a client who hasn’t worked in 15 years,” said Petrone. “Others may be navigating recovery from substance use or other mental health challenges.”
The key to helping clients overcome barriers to employment is in the approach, says Petrone. “We are very creative and innovative and think outside the box.”
Petrone is quick to credit the IPS team for the program’s impact.
“I have an all-star team,” he said. “It’s not easy. It takes a special person to do this for a living. They all have hearts the size of a football field.”
IPS specialists focus on meeting clients where they are—literally and figuratively. Staff often meet clients in the community and tailor services to each person’s goals and circumstances.
“My philosophy: impact first,” Petrone said.
Through collaboration, creativity, and dedication, the IPS team helps clients build confidence, regain independence, and move forward in their recovery, one job at a time.
