Spotlight on: Harmony Recovery’s Alumni Programming

Recovery doesn’t end when treatment does, it grows through connection, community, and continued support. At Harmony Recovery, the Alumni Program helps graduates stay engaged in their recovery journey through meaningful events like the monthly Second Saturday Alumni Celebration, virtual support on the Harmony HUB app, peer-led recovery groups, book clubs, volunteer opportunities, and more. By creating opportunities to reconnect, celebrate milestones, and build lasting relationships, Harmony’s alumni community reminds every graduate that they never have to navigate recovery alone.

What Makes Harmony’s Alumni Program Special?

Harmony Recovery’s Alumni Program is special because Harmony itself is special.  There truly isn’t a more beautiful place to begin your healing journey. It’s often said that there is magic in these mountains. From our incredibly caring staff, wildlife sightings, great food, informative groups, breathtaking starry nights, and the surrounding cathedral rocks, many of our clients have a profound, life-changing experience while on campus.

Our Alumni Program carries that same spirit of magic into everything we do. Our meetings and activities feel like an extension of the Harmony experience, and we are fortunate to have such an amazing Alumni team leading the way.  The three of us are all people in recovery who attended Harmony ourselves. We’ve experienced the magic firsthand, and we are living proof that recovery is possible. Because we are alumni, we can genuinely relate to the people we serve. We’ve been where they are, and now we have the privilege of being a guide, a resource, and a source of support as they continue their recovery journey. We absolutely love what we do, and our alumni see the passion and want to be a part of it!

What makes the alumni community such an important part of recovery?

The Alumni community serves as a valuable continuation of support following treatment. Shared experiences, along with the established sense of connection within the Harmony brotherhood and sisterhood, help ease the transition back into daily life. This ongoing network reinforces that individuals are not alone in their recovery journey. Alumni have the opportunity to both receive guidance and provide encouragement to others, fostering meaningful relationships that contribute to sustained, long-term recovery.

What makes this alumni community different from other support systems?

The peer-to-peer connections are what make our Alumni community unique. The Alumni Team’s role is to create opportunities for connection, while alumni support and encourage one another through shared experiences. We offer a variety of activities—including art, outdoor adventures, music, comedy, book club, and sports—so there are many ways to get involved. We celebrate each person’s individual pathway to recovery and believe there is no single “right” way to recover. Our goal is to help people build a better quality of life while finding a sense of belonging in a welcoming community where all alumni are valued.

What kinds of support and resources are available through the alumni program?

The number one resource we offer our alumni is the Harmony HUB app. Through the app, alumni can share their recovery journeys through photos, quotes, gratitudes, milestones, and readings. It provides a space to ask questions, connect with peers, and reach out when support is needed. Our team also uses the app to share information about recovery events happening throughout Colorado, as well as updates on Harmony events and activities.

The heart of our Alumni Program is our peer-led support meetings held every Tuesday and Thursday via Zoom. These meetings are driven by alumni, who bring forward the topics and discussions that are most relevant to their lives and recovery journeys.

We also host an in-person All Recovery meeting every Friday in Denver. In addition, our virtual book club meets every Wednesday. We are currently reading The Let Them Theory, creating opportunities for meaningful discussion, reflection, and connection.

At Harmony, we believe recovery is about more than abstinence—it is about building a fulfilling and enjoyable life. We encourage alumni to explore new interests, reconnect with old passions, and develop healthy hobbies and social connections.

To support this, we offer a wide variety of activities and events, including ski trips, camping excursions, holiday celebrations, cooking classes, trivia and game nights, art workshops, spiritual retreats, kickball tournaments, sporting events, comedy nights, and much more. Our goal is to provide opportunities for connection, fun, personal growth, and continued support in recovery.

What do alumni often say they value most about staying connected?

Our alumni frequently share how much they value the spiritual aspect of Harmony. From our beautiful mountain setting and the presence of wildlife to the support of our Spiritual Advisor team, these elements create a unique experience that continues to resonate long after treatment.

We strive to keep that connection alive by offering opportunities for alumni to engage with spirituality beyond their time on campus. This includes Spiritual Advisor-led retreats, special event sessions, and recorded meditations available through the Harmony HUB app.

Alumni also appreciate opportunities to return to campus for events such as Second Saturday, Days of Harmony, and our annual Homecoming Picnic each July. Returning to Harmony allows alumni to reflect on where their recovery journey began and recognize how much they have grown. Seeing their progress firsthand often renews their commitment to recovery and inspires them to continue moving forward.

One of the things we hear most often is that simply stepping back onto the Harmony campus is a profound and meaningful spiritual experience. The connection to the community, the setting, and the memories of transformation remind alumni that they are part of something larger than themselves and that they never have to walk their recovery journey alone.

What is the impact of Harmony’s alumni network?

In 2025, we launched Harmony’s Alumni Ambassador Program. Since its inception, we have trained 12 alumni to represent and promote Harmony within their communities. The program provides meaningful leadership opportunities and allows our alumni to give back by serving as positive role models. Our ambassadors speak at and lead meetings, attend events, share their recovery experiences, and help connect people with resources when they are seeking help for addiction.  Our ambassadors have volunteered at so many events that it’s nearly impossible to calculate the number of hours they’ve dedicated to serving Harmony. Simply put, it’s a lot. They are our go-to people and a true extension of the Alumni Team. Their commitment, passion, and willingness to serve help keep the spirit of Harmony alive long after treatment ends.

Service is a cornerstone of our Alumni Program, and we offer many opportunities for alumni to give back. Whether it’s participating in Beautification Day, supporting the EP Duck race, volunteering at the Step Up for Women 5K, or helping with our annual golf tournament, there are countless ways to get involved.  Service is about more than helping others—it helps us feel connected, get outside of ourselves, discover purpose, and contribute to something greater. Our alumni consistently express gratitude for these opportunities to give back.

One of the most inspiring examples of this spirit of service happened earlier this year. Our counseling team shared that many detox clients were arriving without basic necessities and asked if alumni might be willing to help.  That evening, I created an Amazon Wish List and posted it on the HUB.  The response was immediate.  By Monday, our alumni had purchased 55 pairs of socks, 28 pairs of underwear, 10 pairs of shoes, 8 coats, and 20 sports bras for clients in need.  In fact, so many packages arrived that we joked our alumni had broken the Estes Park Post Office.  Moments like these remind us that recovery is about more than staying sober. It’s about showing up for one another, giving back, and creating a community where people know they are cared for. Our alumni continue to demonstrate that spirit every day.
