What to Expect from a Mental Health Assessment

Starting behavioral health care can feel overwhelming, especially if you are unsure what kind of support you need. AllHealth Network’s statewide Assessment and Referral Service helps take the guesswork out of getting started.

What happens during an assessment?

A behavioral health assessment is a conversation with a licensed clinician. Your clinician will explain the process, answer your questions and ask what brought you in and what you hope to gain from the assessment.

You may be asked about:

  • Your current concerns and symptoms
  • Your mental health and medical history
  • Previous treatment or medications
  • Alcohol or drug use
  • Your personal experiences and cultural background
  • Your strengths, support system and goals

These questions help your clinician understand your needs and determine what type of care may be most helpful. There are no right or wrong answers, and you do not need to know your diagnosis or which service you need before getting started.

What happens after the assessment?

Following the assessment, your clinician will provide personalized recommendations. These may include therapy, medication management, substance use treatment, psychological testing or other community supports.

Our Care Connection staff can help you find appropriate services based on your needs, insurance and preferences. This may include care at AllHealth Network, coordination with an existing provider or a referral to a specialized community partner.
